Geese at the El Rey Theater, Los Angeles – September 20, 2024

Brooklyn-based post-punk outfit Geese delivered a high-energy, sold-out performance at the El Rey Theater in Los Angeles this past Friday, capping off their tour in a climactic fashion. With a crowd capacity of 771, the band’s largest headlining show in the city, Geese brought a unique blend of indie pink and art rock, intertwining their latest material with fan favorites and a few surprise covers that kept the audience enthralled.

From the moment they took the stage, Geese wasted no time in captivating the crowd. Opening with the unreleased track “Islands of Men,” the band set the tone for the night with their signature sound—Cameron Winter’s raw vocals paired with the angular guitar work of Emily Green. The chemistry between the band members was undeniable, as they navigated through the twists and ti=urns of their intricate compositions with ease. Dom DiGesu’s basslines and Max Bassin’s drumming provided a tight, rhythmic foundation, while touring member Sam Revas added depth to their live sound.

The set was a roller coaster of emotions and sonic experimentation, with highlight including “Undoer” and “I See Myself” from their acclaimed 2023 album 3D Country. The crowd erupted during the frenetic performance of “Fantasies/Survival” from their debut Projector (2021), and the unexpected segue into Green Day’s “American Idiot” during “2122” was a playful moment that sent the audience into a frenzy of dancing and crowd-surfing.

Cameron Winter’s stage presence was magnetic, particularly during “Mysterious Love,” where his vocals soared over the driving rhythms, and “Disco,” a standout from Projector, had the crowd singing along to every word. The mix of new and old material kept the energy at a constant high, and the band balanced their art-rock complexity with crowd-pleasing moments.

Before closing the night with the explosive “Crusades,” the band took a moment to wish their guitar tech a happy 21st birthday, a personal touch that added tot he camaraderie of the evening. The final notes of the night rang out with cheers, as fans left the El Rey buzzing from a performance that showcased the band’s growing prowess and ability to captivate.

The show was a fitting end to Geese’s journey supporting King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard, and as they prepare for their upcoming festival dates, including Austin City Limits, it’s clear that Geese are a band on the rise, poised to make even bigger waves in the post-punk scene.

Geese’s ability to blend intensity with artful musicianship makes them a standout in today’s rock landscape, and their Los Angeles performance was nothing short of unforgettable.
