On October 12th, 2024- Kerry Kenny Band released their newest single “Robert McGee” and it’s a heartfelt tribute exploring themes of loss, legacy, and the enduring influence of iconic storytellers. Musically, “Robert McGee” leans into the bluesy, folk-driven sound that defined much of Kristofferson’s work. The use of live-tracking to tape imbues the recording with a nostalgic, analog warmth that is both intimate and evocative, connecting listeners to the simplicity of the storytelling tradition that Kristofferson excelled at. The vocal deliver in “Robert McGee” is undoubtedly central to the song’s impact. Kerry Kenny’s performance mirrors Kristofferson’s raw, emotive style, where every word is imbued with meaning. Kenny’s voice blends elements of folk, blues, and country, and the emotion behind the performance is sure to resonate deeply with listeners, especially those who are familiar with the original “Me and Bobby McGee.”
“While touring in Germany and Belgium a few weeks ago, I woke up with an odd urge to continue songwriter Kris Kristofferson’s story of “Bobby McGee.” I sprang out of bed at 6:00 am (very unusual during a tour) & wrote “Robert McGee” for a live tracked-to-tape recording that same day in Bad Sassendorf, Germany. With the loss of Mr. Kristofferson a few days ago, I feel particularly moved to release this song now. I wanted to send this tune to him, grateful for his inspiration.” –Kerry Kenny
