070 Shake is back with exciting news: her highly-anticipated new album, Petrichor, is set to drop on November 15, 2024. Alongside this announcement, the New Jersey native has released the album’s first official single, ‘Winter Baby / New Jersey Blues,” complete with a visually stunning music video directed by Bennett Watanabe, featuring actress Lily-Rose Depp.
The track showcases Shake’s ability to blend various musical influences into genre-defying anthems. Produced by powerhouse trio—Dave Hamelin (known for his work with Beyoncé and King Princess), Tyler Johnson (who has collaborated with Harry Styles and Miley Cyrus), and Patrick Krief (of The Dears fame)—this single offers listeners a tantalizing preview of what’s to come in Petrichor.
The term “petrichor,” which describes the earthy scent produced when rain falls on dry soil, resonates deeply with Shake. In her recent cover story for Cultured Magazine, she explained, ““Petrichor is a feeling; it’s the perfect word to describe this body of music.” The album draws inspiration from cinematic influences, notably Wong Kar-Wai’s Fallen Angels and Gaspar Noé’s Climax, contributing to its eclectic sound and aesthetic.
The music video for “Winter Baby / New Jersey Blues” embodies this vision, contrasting the 1950s jukebox pop vibes of “Winter Baby” with the contemporary edge of “New Jersey Blues,” characterized by distorted 808 bass lines. Featuring Lily Rose Depp as a classic femme fatale and Shake as her elusive love interest, the visual narrative explores themes of rebellion and desire, challenging societal judgments as they passionately pursue one another.
Petrichor promises to be Shake’s most intimate and bold work yet, blending acoustic guitars, ornate piano passages, ominous synths, and hip-hop anthems with psychedelic elements. Executive produced by Shake and longtime collaborator Dave Hamelin, this album is set to further showcase her distinctive artistry.
Since her debut in 2016, 070 Shake has gained recognition for her emotional vocal delivery and futuristic production style, seamlessly fusing hip-hop, pop, and electronic music. Her critically acclaimed debut album, Modus Vivendi, released in 2020, was followed by You Can’t Kill Me in 2022. Notably, her feature on RAYE’s hit single “Escapism” achieved significant success, topping the U.K. Singles Chart and earning double platinum status in the U.S. and several other countries.
With Petrichor, Shake is ready to take her sound to new heights, exposing the most vulnerable parts of her heart through rich orchestral arrangements and live instrumentation.
