Mariah Carey and Vevo have unveiled a behind-the-scenes episode of Footnotes to celebrate the “Make My Wish Come True Edition” music video for her timeless hit, “All I Want for Christmas Is You.” As the song marks its 30th anniversary, this installment dives into the making of the glamorous video, inspired by the golden age of Hollywood musicals and the legendary Busby Berkeley.
Carey, along with renowned director Joseph Kahn, reimagined the beloved holiday classic with a fresh yet nostalgic twist. “We wanted to create something different from the original, but still very fun,” Carey explains, adding that the concept was rooted in Berkeley’s signature style of elaborate choreography and cinematic spectacle.
The video’s production wasn’t without its challenges, as Carey admitted her struggles with dancing alongside the highly trained performers: “Dancing is not my forte, but I think it worked out well in the end.” The intricate Busby Berkeley sequence featuring dancers on platforms took hours to perfect due to the need for multiple passes and angles, showcasing the meticulous attention to detail.
Adding a personal touch, the video features heartwarming cameos from Carey’s family. Her twins, Monroe and Moroccan, bring energy with their festive dance moves, while young actress Mykal-Michelle Harris portrays a youthful Mariah, embodying the joy of Christmas. Even Carey’s dog, Cha Cha makes a memorable appearance, continuing the tradition started by her dogs Jack and Princess in the original 1994 video.
Director Joseph Kahn revealed his excitement about the project, calling it a “surreal experience” to create something destined to be iconic. His daughter Josie also appears in the video as the angelic girl emerging from a gift box, further emphasizing the familial and festive spirit.
Thew new video commemorates the incredible legacy of “All I Want for Christmas Is You,” which remains the best-selling Christmas single by a female artist. With 1.5 billion views across its various official videos and a record-breaking run atop the Billboard Hot 100 for five consecutive holiday seasons, the song continues to be a hallmark of holiday cheer.
As fans around the world stream the new video, they’re reminded once again why Mariah Carey is—and will always be—the undisputed Queen of Christmas.
