Crucial Velocity announces sophomore album Controller, premieres new single “Hollow”

Crucial Velocity, the formidable metal collective featuring members of King Diamond, Shaolin Death Squad, and Castain Harris, has unveiled the latest single, “Hollow,” from their forthcoming album Controller. The track, now premiering exclusively on Metal Insider, is accompanied by a gripping video directed by Wayne Joyner (renowned for his work with Dream Theater and Tremonti). With its searing commentary on humanity’s cyclical failures and unyielding ideologies, “Hollow” sets the tone for what promises to be a landmark release in the band’s discography.

Opening with the thought-provoking quote by Georg Hegel—“The only thing that we learn from history is that we learn nothing from history”—”Hollow” explores the perils of blind allegiance to ideologies. Songwriter Nate Bauer shares that the track was inspired by a conversation about the dangers of unquestioned beliefs, stating:

“Ideology, in my opinion, is the root of all evil… People place complete trust in the ideology and its leaders without really thinking about what they are following. This has led to the rise of dangerous movements throughout history, and yet, here we are in 2024, still trapped in the same patterns.”

Androo O’Hearn’s commanding vocal performance, characterized by death metal growls and melodic harmonies, underscores the anger and urgency of the lyrics. The band’s layered sound, blending dark atmospheres and accessible hooks, reflect their diverse influences, from Opeth to Black Sabbath to Queen and Ghost.

The lineup of Crucial Velocity is as impressive as their music:

  • Matt Thompson (King Diamond) brings his signature precision and creativity to the drums.
  • Androo O’Hearn (Shaolin Death Squad) delivers dynamic vocals and intricate keyboard work.
  • Michael Harris (Chastain/Harris, Darkology) weaves electrifying guitar solos into the mix.
  • Nate Bauer, the band’s creative backbone, handles guitars, bass, keyboards, and songwriting duties.
  • Gary Long (Nomad Recording) helms the mixing and mastering, ensuring the album’s polished sound.

Set for release on January 10, 2025, Controller is the band’s follow-up to their critically acclaimed self-titled debut album. Described as “heavier, leaner, and darker,” the sophomore effort builds on their unique blend of complexity and accessibility. The first single, “Brainstorm,” debuted on November 15, 2024, showcasing the band’s evolution and razor-sharp focus.

The lyrics of “Hollow” reflect the band’s thematic depth, with lines like:
“You are nothing but a shallow hate machine / Spreading like a new disease / Held captive by your hollow ideology.”
These words challenge listeners to confront the destructive power of blind loyalty and thoughtless adherence.

As anticipation builds for the release of Controller, Crucial Velocity is poised to solidify their reputation as one of the most innovative acts in modern metal.
