On December 18th, 2024- SLEEPTALKER released their newest single “Deathbed” which is a powerful and emotive single that represents the feeling of sorrow and having difficulty with coming to terms with losing a loved one or in the process of knowing you might lose that person. “Deathbed” starts off with a very melodic sound almost representing grief in a way with a slight hint of hope. And as the song progressed; the heavier vocals could represent the anger of knowing that in a far distance that loss might occur. The mixture of both the clean and heavier vocals reminds me of a mental battle of trying to understand that life will change after a traumatic experience. And that the future becomes visionless.
“Deathbed” is a self-reflection single that makes the listener realize that life is short and that anything could happen suddenly. We need to appreciate ourselves and who we have in our lives because knowing that death at anytime could come knocking on our door, we need to be able to process that in our minds. Life is unpredictable. “Blinding haze” is the best way to interpret the way I feel about this single because life is a whirlwind and you never know what’s going to happen the next day. We are in a constant state of feeling like life is an illusion and that we are blinded by what’s really happening and when something traumatic happens, we have no idea how to process that. We go about our lives not thinking that death may occur and when we are going through that experience; we all sit back and wonder what we could’ve done better or what we could’ve said to the person you might lose.
“Deathbed was written primarily about our drummer Eugene’s car accident. The day before Thanksgiving him and his then girlfriend were traveling to visit family and they pulled over to switch who was driving. As soon as they got back in the car, they got hit while stopped by a speeding driver and they both had to be airlifted to the hospital. Gene himself was in a coma for a few days, had a broken back, neck, brain bleeding.
We weren’t sure if he would ever even wake up from the coma, let alone walk again. So it was a very scary and traumatic time. We all assumed the band was just over.
After a few days he woke up, and within the year not only was he walking, but he was also able to get behind the kit and surpassed where he used to be with it. A full recovery beyond what we ever expected” – SLEEPTALKER
Above here is the video for their last single on their EP “Deathbed Confessions” which takes place in a church almost like a chapel for a funeral. During the video you can see each member of the band leaving red roses on someone in the casket which is their drummer Eugene. Red roses symbolizes deep love and respect, so we know with that aspect Eugene was loved and cherished by so many. The video represents the emotional turmoil that the band experienced when Eugene was in critical condition after an accident. They didn’t know if their friend was going to survive this, so this video could be interpreted especially at the end with Eugene leaving a rose on his own body representing a new life and being able to look back at his near death experience. You can also see Eugene screaming and holding onto the casket looking down at himself which gives me the sense of freedom and being able to finally let go and realize that you gained a new life. And that it’s time to let go of what happened to be able to move forward.
