From Carlsbad to Center Stage: Slow Joy’s Esteban Flores redefines indie rock with heart and soul

Slow Joy, the solo project of Chicano artist Esteban Flores, is reshaping the indie music scene with his heartfelt lyrics, unique sound, and electrifying live performances. Born in Carlsbad, New Mexico, and having spent much of his youth in Albuquerque, Flores’ musical journey started early, nurtured by a family deeply rooted in music.

After high school, Flores moved to Dallas, Texas, to chase his musical dreams. Over the past decade, that dream has blossomed into Slow Joy—a project many mistake for a band, though it’s a solo endeavor. “My friends play with me live,” he clarifies, sharing a fun fact that underscores Slow Joy’s DIY spirit.

Being named Best New Band by the Dallas Observer marked a pivotal moment for Flores: “The Observer was the first publication I read when I moved to Dallas,” he recalls. “I used to dream of being featured. It was a pretty cool moment to get recognized.”

This recognition, along with his recent accolade as mxdwn’s Best New Artist of 2024, reflects Flores’ hard work and undeniable talent. Critics have lauded his ability to blend introspective storytelling with genre-defying sonic landscapes, drawing comparisons to iconic acts like The Pixies and Smashing Pumpkins.

Released in summer 2024, Mi Amigo Slow Joy represents a creative turning point for Flores. He describes the EP as a growing season in his career, aiming to elevate his songwriting to new heights. “My resting state is writing niche-style songs that don’t follow the usual structure,” he explains, “With Mi Amigo, I wanted to write songs I would listen to.”

Working with acclaimed producer Mike Sapone (Oso Oso, The Front Bottoms) played a key role in shaping the EP’s sound. “I wanted my songs to be as well-written as possible,” Flores says. “Working with someone I respect as much as Mike really made me want to make songs that were worth him working on.”

Flores described his approach to songwriting as “simple, but poignant,” achieved through meticulous editing. “I try to find the best way to say something and look at the lyrics from the perspective of someone reading them without the melody,” he shares. “If you can’t immediately feel what I’m trying to convey, it’s not ready.”

Despite a demanding tour schedule that includes performances with Real Friends and festival appearances, Flores remains committed to his craft. “Creativity is all about input,” he says. “I try to take in as much art as possible in various forms—film, poetry, music—it helps me have a well to draw from later.”

Fans attending his live shows can expect “loud rock music” and an unforgettable experience. “There’s nothing like a live show. It’s one of the coolest things humans get to do!”

With the release of his debut full-length LP in 2023, Flores is ready to take Slow Joy to new heights. The album, produced by Mike Sapone, builds on the momentum of Mi Amigo Slow Joy and showcases Flores’ growth as an artist.

As he prepares for his most extensive headline tour yet, Flores reflects on his journey and the lessons he’s learned. “Holding things with an open palm,” he says. “My journey is different from others. Life is much easier when you just let it flow like water.”

At the heart of Slow Joy’s music is a desire to connect. “If I can help people forget about the chaos of life for a moment, then I’ve done my job,” Flores shares. “I just want people to create memories and feel like they were in a place they belong.”

With Mi Amigo Slow Joy earning widespread acclaim and his 2025 tour poised to captivate audiences nationwide, Esteban Flores is proving that Slow Joy is a name to watch in the indie music world.
