Chance the Rapper has unveiled “Quiet Storm,” a new single that pays homage to the iconic radio format pioneered by Black DJs in Washington, D.C., during the late 1970s. Released on Inauguration Day, the track transforms a personal narrative into a broader meditation on colonial power and identity.
The release comes as Chance celebrates a historic achievement: the Diamond certification of “I’m the One,” his 2017 collaboration with DJ Khaled, Quavo, Justin Bieber, and Lil Wayne. This certification, marking 10 million sales and stream equivalents in the U.S., makes him the first independent solo artist to reach this milestone.
“Quiet Storm” continues the mission of Chance’s interdisciplinary Star Line project, which connects art, music, and Black history. The project has already produced notable collaborations showcased at prestigious institutions, including Art Basel, Chicago’s Museum of Contemporary Art, and The Art Institute of Chicago.
This latest release further cements Chance’s position as an industry innovator. His groundbreaking achievements include becoming the first independent artist to win multiple Grammy Awards for his streaming-only mixtape Coloring Book and the first to both host and perform on Saturday Night Live without a traditional record deal.
“Quiet Storm” is available now on all streaming platforms.
