Gwen Stefani and VEVO celebrate 20th anniversary of “Hollaback Girl” with exclusive footnotes episode

Gwen Stefani and Vevo have teamed up to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the iconic hit “Hollaback Girl” with a special episode of Vevo Footnotes, taking fans behind the scenes of one of the most influential tracks of the 2000s.

Released in 2005, “Hollaback Girl” became an instant chart-topping sensation, marking a cultural milestone for Stefani. To commemorate its 20th anniversary, Stefani revisits the song’s creation, the music video’s impactful visuals, and the deeper connection she shares with collaborator Pharrell Williams.

In the Footnotes episode, Stefani reveals that the concept for the video was inspired by her hometown of Anaheim, blending the essence of high school life with a message of empowerment. “The song is all about owning yourself, and saying, ‘Yeah, call me out for being me. It’s not going to hurt, because I am who I am,” Stefani explains. The vibrant visuals showcase Stefani’s personal connection to the song’s themes, which resonate with self-confidence and individuality.

Stefani also reflects on her long-time collaboration with Pharrell, who had previously worked with No Doubt on “Hella Good.” Describing their creative chemistry, Stefani recounts, “The minute I met Pharrell, I was enamored. His aura, his creative energy, his spirit… everything about him was super infectious.” Their spiritual connection ignited a partnership that brought “Hollaback Girl” to life.

The episode also touches on the iconic marching band sounded that defined the track. Both Stefani and Pharrell had played in high school bands, and Stefani shares that the marching band’s drumline and beat were key influences in shaping the song’s energetic vibe. “I knew the subject matter was that I was going to take the high road and not ‘holla’ back.’ I was going to use my gift of songwriting and music to show who I was,” Stefani says.

“Hollaback Girl” was also an opportunity for Stefani to live out a long-held dream. Having never made the cheerleading team in high school, Stefani had the chance to embody the spirit of a cheerleader in the video, further underscoring the song’s theme of empowerment and self-expression. “It was finally my big moment to be a cheerleader,” she shares.

Reflecting on the music video today, Stefani jokes, “If I remade the video now, I would’ve had Pharrell in the video a bit more.” But she adds that the final product was exactly as she had envisioned it, down to the styling and energy.

Stefani also opens up about her personal struggle with dyslexia, which she describes as one of her insecurities. The irony of teaching the world how to spell “bananas” through the catchy chorus is not lost on her. “Not a lot of people know this, but I’m dyslexic– to the point where it’s my insecurity. So, the fact that I’ve taught so many people to spell ‘bananas’… I’m sure God is up there smiling,” she says.

The anniversary of “Hollaback Girl” comes with major recognition, as the song was a global hit, topping the Billboard Hot 100 and making Stefani the first artist to sell over one million global digital downloads in the U.S. The track earned Grammy nominations for Record of the Year and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance, solidifying its place in pop culture history.

As Stefani reflects on the song’s impact, she humbly admits, “There’s no way I ever thought I would have an impact in the world, let alone have a song like ‘Hollaback Girl’ that encompasses so many different things at one time, culturally. It’s mind-blowing to me.”
