Snow can’t stop the bluegrass: Greensky Bluegrass warms up Boston’s House of Blues

On a snowy February 15, 2025, Boston’s House of Blues was abuzz with warmth and energy as fans braved the elements for a night of bluegrass music. Though classifying Greensky Bluegrass as a bluegrass band would be a disservice to the unique sound they’ve developed, blending elements of bluegrass, jazz, and rock and roll.

The evening kicked off with the Kitchen Dwellers, a four-piece band from Montana whose sound is self-described as “folk-infused bluegrass spiked with psychedelic vision and rock energy.” Their upbeat sound was the perfect opener, setting the tone for the evening.

As the snow continued to accumulate outside, the atmosphere inside grew warmer as Greensky Bluegrass took the stage. The band delivered two full sets, showcasing their signature blend of traditional bluegrass with modern improvisations. The chemistry among the members was palpable, each song flowing seamlessly into the next, demonstrating why this band continues to sell out shows more than 20 years after their first album.

The highlight of the night came during the encore when the Kitchen Dwellers joined Greensky Bluegrass on stage for a heartfelt rendition of John Hartford’s “Get No Better.” The collaboration showcased how the best part of bluegrass is when musicians all come together and feed off each other’s energy.

Despite the winter storm, the packed venue was a testament to Boston’s dedication to live music and the magnetic pull of Greensky Bluegrass’s performances. It was an unforgettable night where the warmth of the music melted away the chill of the snow outside.
