Recently, Mayday Parade announced the coming of a three-part album in celebration of the band’s 20th anniversary. The first installment of this journey, Sweet, drops on April 18. The other parts will be released later, and I’m sure more will be announced as it draws closer. Mayday Parade has been around for, well, 20 years. This is a huge milestone for them, and I’m sure every fan who has been around since day one is crying happy tears. I have not been around for that entire duration, but seeing bands celebrate big moments like this make me happy. Their music has always been beautiful, with melodies that just flow.
As the band moves towards this massive accomplishment, they’ve explained that their decision to release the album in the three-parts allows them to focus on their journey and why they’ve continued evolving as a cornerstone of the scene. They released two singles in early January that will be apart of the first installment, and now we have three tracks confirmed for the upcoming release. The newest track is titled “Towards You.”
Mayday Parade vocalist Derek Sanders described the track as just simple love song. Sometimes, all you need is an acoustic guitar, your voice, and a few strings to tell that special someone just home much they mean to you.
I’m a sucker for a song like that, and this one is no different. It’s beautiful and touching—the way Derek’s voice pairs with the strums. It’s a love song. That’s all there really is to it.
My favorite lyric is, “I’m still singing because you make me feel less small,” and I think that line is so powerful. Actually, scratch what I said earlier—this isn’t just any love song. There’s really a big difference in love and feeling loved. To feel loved by someone special makes you feel like you’re on top of the world, like you can do anything. Love is an emotion, but feeling loved is an experience—and this song captures both. It’s an epic love song. I love it. You’ll hopefully love it. Just go stream it.
