Slow Joy drops new single, “Gruesome”

Slow Joy’s new single dropped almost a week ago now, and it’s a BANGER. Alongside the single release, he has announced that his debut album, A Joy So Slow At Times I Don’t Think It’s Coming, officially releasing across all major streaming platforms on May 16—I’m excited!

If the full album is as catchy and vibe-y as the single, we’re in for a good one. 2025 only just started, but the amount of new music that’s been getting announced lately has me ready for a great year in the scene. So buckle up for the ride everybody!

The opening melody of this track rings a little techno before the drums jump in. Repetitive beats and lyrics make this sort of a running loop deal and it makes it super fun. I did have to do a google search for lyrics because, unfortunately, Spotify could not provide them yet.

I love the lines:

“Under the surface, Bitter and nervous, Do my best, To make it out alive”

Isn’t that what we’re all doing every day? Life is rough—sometimes even “gruesome” to get through—but all we can do is try our best and we’ll get through it. The way these lyrics are so raw and real counter the upbeat nature of the overall tempo, which makes for a nice contrast.

Life moves fast, and sometimes we put on a mask to hide what’s really underneath our surfaces. Songs like this always make me feel so at home, reminding us that even when we often feel alone, someone else is going through a similar feeling. We are not alone. Music keeps us connected, and this song is a great example of that.
