In a music industry still grappling with gender disparity in production, Gender Amplified is making waves with their debut EP, In Bloom. Released via Warner Music Group’s independent distribution arm ADA, the three-track project is a shimmering showcase of talent from women and gender-expansive artists, proving that innovation thrives when creatives are given space to flourish.
In Bloom is the product of Gender Amplified’s CTRL Room Series, community-driven songwriting and production camps designed to increase visibility and accessibility for underrepresented voices in the music industry. The result? A concise yet dynamic journey that spans multiple landscapes while staying true to its core mission of empowerment and inclusion.
A short but impactful journey
The EP kicks off with “Trick Mirror”, a sparkly, hyper-pop-infused track featuring Caro and Dance Arts Center. Shimmering instrumentals and an infectious energy make it an instant standout. The story behind the song’s creation adds to its mystique—after an early demo was lost in a file transfer, Caro and collaborator Nico were forced to rebuild from scratch, leading to a track that is simultaneously melancholic and effervescent. Caro describes it as “a mix of innocence and nostalgia, sweet and sad at the same time.”
The centerpiece of the EP, “Still Got Time”, slows things down with lush harmonies and beautifully layered vocals. It’s a meditative moment on the record, demonstrating the depth and versatility of the artists involved. The closing track, “Future Number”, originally released in 2023, rounds out the project with its groovy, synth-heavy instrumentation. Featuring Lyd Marie, virgogabrielle, and Olivia Reid, the track is an ode to growth, self-reflection, and embracing the journey ahead.
More than music: A movement in action
Founded in 2007 by celebrated producer and engineer Ebonie Smith, Gender Amplified has been a force for change in the music industry. Through initiatives like the CTRL Room Series, the organization has created spaces where women and gender-expansive producers can thrive. Smith, whose credits include Hamilton: The Broadway Cast Album, Janelle Monáe’s Dirty Computer, and Cardi B’s Invasion of Privacy, has long been an advocate for equity in music production. With In Bloom, she and her team take their advocacy one step further, giving rising talent a platform to share their voices with the world.
The impact of In Bloom extends beyond the music itself. To celebrate its release, Gender Amplified is hosting an official listening party at Commune in Brooklyn on March 20. The event will feature DJ sets and a space for artists, fans, and industry members to connect, reinforcing the community-driven ethos that defines the organization.
A future in full bloom
In Bloom is not just an EP; it’s proof of what can happen when barriers are removed, and creativity is nurtured. It’s a testament to the power of collaboration, representation, and the importance of making room for voices that have long been overlooked in music production.
As Gender Amplified continues its work, In Bloom serves as a bright, iridescent reminder of the industry’s potential when inclusivity is prioritized. Whether you’re drawn to the glittering textures of “Trick Mirror,” the soul-stirring harmonies of “Still Got Time,” or the introspective groove of “Future Number,” there’s something in this EP for everyone.
