Atmospheric indie-rock band Day Joy return with a powerful new single, “JFC,” out yesterday across all streaming platforms. The track serves as the opening chapter to their forthcoming third album, Closed Caption for the Horror, slated for release this fall.
“JFC” find Day Joy delving deep into the concept of “everyday horrors,” blurring the lines between the exaggerated violence of camp-horror films and the quiet devastation of real-life loss. The song opens with a jarring exclamation—”Jesus F*cking Christ!”—setting a stark, unsettling tone. Frontman Michael Serrin describes the track as an exploration of emotional violence: “It’s about the kind of pain we don’t always see—where you’re slipping once ice, and you’re not sure if you’re falling backward or running headfirst into something worse.
“Set to a hazy blend of psych-folk and jazzy undertones, “JFC” balances raw lyrical imagery with lush instrumentation. Serrin’s vocals float over layered harmonies, vintage synths, and hypnotic basslines as he narrates scenes of burning bushes, smiling coffins, and desperate getaways. These conflicting images highlight the themes that run throughout Closed Caption for the Horror: the contrast between life and death, urgency and resignation, survival and surrender.
“JFC” follows the band’s earlier single, “Apparition Last Night Hysteria,” which has already racked up playlist placements and critical acclaim. Both tracks hint at the eerie beauty that defines Day Joy’s upcoming project, recorded in collaboration with producer Andy LeMaster (Bright Eyes, Phoebe Bridgers, R.E.M.). The result is a sound that’s more expansive and haunting than ever—an evolution from the band’s lo-fi beginnings to a cinematic, full-band experience.
Day Joy’s story is one of resilience. After breaking through with their debut Go to Sleep, Mess and subsequent national tours, the band went on hiatus following the tragic loss of Serrin’s younger brother. They returned in 2020 with Great Satan, Mass Appeal, an album that resonated with fans despite being released in the middle of the pandemic. Now based in Austin, TX, Day Joy has rebuilt its lineup and sound, fusing ethereal melodies with a darker, more conceptual narrative.
“JFC” is just the beginning of this next chapter. Closed Caption for the Horror promises to be an immersive journey into the duality of beauty and terror—an album that finds Day Joy confronting the horrors of modern life and transforming them into something strangely comforting.
Listen to “JFC” now on all platforms. Stay tuned for more from Day Joy as they continue to roll out their highly anticipated third album.
