Indie-folk darlings The Head and The Heart have just dropped a poignant new music video for their single “After the Setting Sun,” taken from their forthcoming sixth studio album, Aperture, due for release on May 9 via Verve Forecast. The video, created by the band’s guitarist and vocalist Matt Gervais and filmmaker Christopher James Cunningham (Dark Details), seamlessly blends intimate family home video footage with behind-the-scenes studio moments, offering an emotionally charged narrative about the complex process of grieving a loved one while finding hope in the aftermath.
“After the Setting Sun” arrives following the success of the band’s recording-breaking #1 AAA single “Arrow,” which has been a staple on alternative radio. Additionally, the band released a special version of “Arrow” featuring Mt. Joy to support victims of the recent Los Angeles wildfires. The single’s introspective themes of personal loss and emotional healing set the tone for Aperture, which marks a significant return to the DIY approach that defined their earlier work.
For the first time since the 2011 self-titled debut, The Head and The Heart self-produced Aperture, reaffirming their creative independence and collaborative spirit. This approach allowed them to reconnect with the raw energy and authenticity that has always defined their music. In a year of writing and recording sessions in both their home bases in Seattle and Richmond, Virginia, the band crafted a collection of songs that feels more vibrant and unapologetically present than ever before.
Speaking about the album’s overarching themes, Gervais explains, “Aperture represents the choice we all must make between resigning ourselves to darkness, or letting the light in. It feels relevant to the times, in that we’re choosing between ignorance vs. enlightenment on a macro scale, and complacency vs. hope on a personal scale. The record is about recognizing that we have the power to choose hope, again and again, despite the obstacles we face.” This theme is echoed in the title track, which Gervais describes as “an invitation to wake up in the present moment recognizing that it is all we have.”
Fans can look forward to The Head and The Heart’s upcoming “Aperture” tour, which kicks off May 31 in Detroit. The 2025 North American run will include major stops such as Central Park Summerstage in New York City and the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles, as well as festival appearances at Summerfest and the Harvest Jazz & Blues Festival. The band is also giving back through their Rivers and Roads Foundation, with each ticket sold adding $1 to support local Seattle-based music programs and mental health resources for musicians.
The 2025 tour will feature support form variety of talented artists, including Futurebirds, Anna Graves, and Hurray For The Riff Raff. Every ticket purchase will contribute to the band’s philanthropic efforts, reflecting their continued commitment to social good alongside their artistic pursuits.
