Pom Pom Squad brings punk rock wonderland to Williamsburg

Pom Pom Squad closed out their tour with a sold-out show at Music Hall of Williamsburg on April 4. For frontwoman Mia Berrin — who was raised on Long Island and and attended college at NYU — it was a homecoming of sorts, with fans packing the venue wall to wall.

The crowd was a mix: longtime followers, locals who knew the NYU-era version of the band, and a solid pocket of queer kids who didn’t need anyone to explain why this show mattered. People weren’t just there to watch — they were there to be seen. Pom Pom Squad isn’t just a band you listen to; it’s a band you align yourself with.

The night’s “Through the Looking Glass” theme played out in the visuals, the lighting, and especially in Mia’s wardrobe. Her look — a corseted, ribboned, satin-and-lace ensemble — gave off a full punk rock “Alice in Wonderland” vibe. A rhinestone-encrusted mic, matching sparkly hearts on her guitar strap, and knee-high white combat boots completed the image.

Mid-set, Mia brought out her mother, who walked onstage to hand her a pair of silver pom poms and delivered the “Street Fighter” voice-over live: “If they ain’t paying your bills, pay them b*tches no mind!” The crowd exploded. I actually spent part of the night photographing from the house, standing next to her mom — who had nothing but pride and quiet gratitude as she watched the crowd scream her daughter’s lyrics back at her.

Pom Pom Squad’s performance matched the aesthetic — polished enough to catch your reflection, sharp enough to cut if you looked too close. On second thought, maybe this wasn’t a homecoming. Mia’s energy wasn’t nostalgic. It was forward-facing — steady, clear-eyed, like someone who’s not returning to something, but stepping fully into whatever’s next.
