New York-based indie pop rock heroes American Authors may be best known for the folksy Americana sound of their 2014 debut, Oh, What a Life (“Best Day of My Life,” “Believer“), but history has proven they are plenty more than that. The trio of singer Zac Barnett, bassist Dave Rublin, and drummer Matt Sanchez met at Berklee College of Music, and have put their collective music education to good use; from the their folk-rock roots, to the more pop-heavy What We Live For, the country tinge of Call Your Mother, and now the European gypsy jazz sound of “Tumble Down,” the band is known for pushing the bounds of genre and constantly challenging themselves as they evolve over their careers.
In Barnett’s words, “Tumble Down is about fighting for a relationship that keeps falling apart. No matter how hard you try to save that love, it all just keeps tumbling down… The initial idea of “Tumble Down” was much slower with more modern production. While listening, our guitarist, ZT, started messing around with some Django Reinhardt riff & lightning struck,” Zac shares. “I love Django & Gogol Bordello, so we wanted to try our take on that classic European vibe.” The natural tension and intensity of the genre and tasteful instrumentation make for a song that effortlessly captures the anxiety as life tumbles down, but of course with the optimistic spin that American Authors are known for – with an irresistibly catchy whistle hook that harkens back to the very first singles that put them on the map over a decade prior.
The release of “Tumble Down” marks the beginning of the countdown to the band’s sixth full-length record Voz Extraña; a release date has yet to be announced, though if the title – Spanish for “strange voice” – and the exciting new direction of this single tells us anything, it is that American Authors will continue to experiment with their sound, while still flexing the strength of their songwriting and knack for a catchy tune that has kept them beloved to fans for so many years. Stream the new single here, but be warned – you’ll be whistling along for days to come.
