Brooklyn-based singer-songwriter Andy Tongren, best known as the frontman of indie pop band Young Rising Sons, has now ventured out on his own with the release of his debut solo single, “So Good.” Released Friday, May 9, via S-Curve Records, in Tongren’s own words, the track “is about embracing the moment with a carefree & reckless energy without worry of what comes next. It’s finding an ember in a world that can feel dark and lonely and throwing gasoline on it. It’s chasing the high just to feel that brief hit of serotonin.”
An eternal optimist, Tongren says, “I really do try and find the silver lining any way I can… At my core, I feel like there’s nothing else I can do.” Though the bright and sunny single was born of an ironically opposite situation; “It’s funny – it kind of came from a dark place… I’m living in a cold, dark basement on the outskirts of Bushwick, trying to get by day to day…Winter was starting and I think I just wanted to feel a little bit of warmth.”
Tongren says that he wanted the track to capture a moment just as much as its lyrics suggest, and was as impulsive and free with the process of creating the song: “I wasn’t overly precious with the approach to writing… All the minutiae that comes with blending art and commerce…it’s so easy to get caught up in that. On ‘So Good,’ I didn’t think – I just did. If it’s a little bit off, leave it. There’s real human elements in this.”
As Young Rising Sons are known for their devout following and addictive live performance, Tongren looks forward to returning to the road with his debut solo show at Berlin in his beloved home of New York City on June 24. Of performance, he says, “It’s in the fabric of who I am at this point. Seeing people react to something you’ve written or been a part of, there’s no words to describe that. I’ve always found myself chasing that feeling.”
