Murder By Death say goodbye with “Lose You,” a devastating ode to helpless loss

Indie rock stalwarts Murder By Death have never been afraid to peer into the darkness. But with “Lose You,” the second single from their tenth and final album Egg & Dart, the band trades gothic narrative for raw truth, delivering a stripped down, emotionally brutal track that sits heavy in the chest long after the last note fades.

The song is a gut punch both melancholic and gorgeous. “Lose You” is not about breaking up, or even death in the traditional sense – it’s about that sickening fear of losing someone you love when there’s nothing you can do to stop it. As frontman Adam Turla puts it, the song speaks to “that feeling of anxiety around not having control.” Whether it’s illness, addiction, or the sheer unpredictability of life, “Lose You” wraps its arms around sorrow and whispers: you’re not alone in this ache.

Lifted from Egg & Dart, the band’s swan song releasing June 13, the single is a perfect microcosm of what the album promises, a haunting, gorgeous, emotionally textured exploration of goodbyes. There’s a deep elegance to the whole record, as it examines loss in many forms, romantic, existential, even creative. But “Lose You” may be its most vulnerable moment, precisely because it doesn’t offer answers. It just sits with the ache, and sometimes we all need to learn to do that.

Produced by Kevin Ratterman in Los Angeles, Egg & Dart is steeped in layers, both musically and thematically. Its name, pulled from a classical Greco-Roman architectural motif, is more than ornamental. The “egg” (life) and “dart” (death) echo across the record’s themes like footsteps in a long hallway. This is an album written at the intersection of gratitude and grief. A love letter to what was. A funeral for what won’t be again.

After 25 years, ten albums, and an improbable career built on sheer grit and fan devotion, Murder By Death is bowing out not with a bang, but with a heartbreakingly beautiful sigh. And if “Lose You” is any indication, Egg & Dart won’t just be a simple farewell it’ll be a final outcry.

The Egg & Dart farewell tour kicks off June 7 in Bloomington, Indiana, with stops throughout North America and the U.K. (dates below). Supporting acts include fellow kindred spirits like Laura Jane Grace, AJJ, William Elliott Whitmore, and more.

And “Lose You?” It might just be the song you didn’t know you needed. For anyone who’s ever clung to someone slipping through their fingers, this one’s for you.
