“Things We Tell Ourselves In The Dark” is a signal flare from the edge of progressive metal’s uncharted territory.
Between the Buried and Me, never ones to linger in the past, mark their 25th year with The Blue Nowhere, a sweeping, strange, and surprisingly funky new record arriving September 12 via InsideOutMusic. This marks their debut with the prog centric label, and they’re clearly not pulling any punches.
The band’s latest track, “Things We Tell Ourselves In The Dark,” dropped June 12 alongside a visually surreal video from director Miles Skarin. In it, a ghostly hotel blooms with marigold petals and bends into infinity, mirroring the song’s themes of ego, inner noise, and fragile self reflection. It’s gorgeous and unsettling all at once.
Bassist Dan Briggs builds the track on a warped funk groove – rare territory even for BTBAM – and insists it be approached with a kind of rhythmic confidence that feels more Prince than prog. Vocalist Tommy Rogers, meanwhile, turns the lyrics into a personal reckoning, delivered with a swaggering pop lilt that feels almost cocky… until it all caves in.
While past BTBAM records often orbit elaborate narratives, The Blue Nowhere plays more like a haunted diary, ten songs that drift between dream logic and raw introspection. Rogers describes them as “journal entries,” while the album’s cinematic weight comes in part from a newly added string and horn section, all under the seasoned hand of producer Jamie King.
Formats range from digital to deluxe, with a special colored 2LP + 2CD version offering bonus tracks, alternate art, instrumentals, and even a branded hotel door hanger – because why not lean fully into the eerie hotel concept?
The Blue Nowhere lands September 12. Pre-orders open June 13 at betweentheburiedandme.com.
