Murder By Death bids farewell with final album, Egg & Dart

After a quarter century of haunted highways, whiskey soaked stages, and the kind of songs that sneak into your bones, Murder By Death releases their final full length album, Egg & Dart, out today on all platforms.

It’s an ending, sure, but one that feels more like a reckoning than a curtain call. Egg & Dart is the kind of album you carry, simultaneously giving ghost story, love letter, and existential unpacking. It’s quiet in places, thunderous in others, but it never lets go of your hand.

Named for the classical pattern often found carved into crumbling stone columns, symbolizing life and death in one unbroken loop, the title alone sets the tone. These are songs written from the liminal space between holding on and letting go. You’ll find moments of joy here, yes. But also grief, uncertainty, defiance, gratitude. And a whole lot of honesty.

Recorded in Los Angeles with longtime collaborator Kevin Ratterman, Egg & Dart is MBD at their most personal. Where past records may have hidden behind Southern Gothic allegory or murder ballads with a wink, this one strips the veil. Frontman Adam Turla isn’t playing a character anymore. The heartbreak is real. The goodbyes are real. And the weight of closing a 25-year chapter is in every chord.

Across ten albums, Murder By Death has been a band hard to pin down – too twangy for indie, too cerebral for punk, too dark for folk, too literary for rock. And yet they’ve never needed a neat genre tag. They built something better, a fiercely loyal fanbase who showed up no matter the label. Who funded their albums, packed out their cave shows in Tennessee, and treated this band like family.

Now, they’re returning the favor, with an album that feels like a final letter home.

Standout tracks like “Letter to the Editor” and “Sorry” wrestle with regret and forgiveness. Others, like “Wandering,” sweep through with cinematic strings and a bittersweet waltz time sway. And of course, there’s “Lose You,” already earning praise for its aching vulnerability and gut punch honesty.

But Egg & Dart isn’t all sadness. There’s something strangely triumphant in its finality. Not every band gets to write their own ending. Fewer still get to make it this powerful.

To commemorate the release, a special edition vinyl, merch, bonus tracks, test pressings, and exclusive bundles are now available through the band’s webstore. But more importantly, MBD is hitting the road one last time.

The 2025 “Farewell Tour” kicks off June 19 and runs through November, hitting cities across North America and the U.K. Joining them on select dates are fellow travelers Laura Jane Grace, AJJ, William Elliott Whitmore, BJ Barham, and J Roddy Walston, among others. Many shows are already sold out, unsurprising for a band that’s always been better at word of mouth than press kits.

For those still grieving the end, there’s a small light: MBD plans to continue their annual residency at The Caverns in Pelham, TN. It won’t be a tour, it won’t be the same, but it’ll be something.

Because some stories never really end. They just echo on.
