On June 20, The Kid LAROI released another highly anticipated single, “HOW DOES IT FEEL?” as well as an accompanying music video. It seems as though LAROI has pulled out all the stops to deliver his audience summer anthems that will keep us energized all season long. Opening with drums and bass, it builds the vibrant core of the song. “HOW DOES IT FEEL?” is light and refreshing, painting the scene of a party and the intimacy found in a large group. The chorus asks, “If you came at a party, why are you looking down at your phone?,” showing how LAROI is trying to connect with the main love interest, but she is too busy on her phone to enjoy her time. It’s an interesting and prevalent commentary to make early in the summer, and the music video highlights it further.
The video opens with the main love interest, Talia Ryder, walking into the party, sitting in an empty room, and opening her phone. Once LAROI walks in, the music starts and he begins trying to talk and dance with her. Although the room is empty, she seems disconnected from him. This disconnect continues, feeling awkward, for they are the only people in the house. Then the music stops. The house is full of people socializing, dancing, and waiting for the music to start again.
When they are able to get the CD playing again, it becomes clear that LAROI was craving the intimacy of enjoying a party with someone. In all the chaos of a party, one often finds someone to latch onto and grow closer with during the night. However, he wasn’t able to engage in that during the video. In regards to the release date of the single, I think it’s a perfect song to remind us to enjoy the summer, as well as the people we are spending our time with.
