The 1975 headline Glastonbury

This Friday, The 1975 headlined Glastonbury Festival for the first time ever in their career. After taking a hiatus from touring for over a year, when the lineup was announced, fans went crazy.

Going into this show, no one knew what to expect. Will the setlist be the same as it was during the last tour? What will the stage look like? Well, all of these questions were soon answered. But first, let’s talk setlist:

Wow. Now this is what I call a special set. The 1975 performed all of their hit songs, sprinkling in some fan favourites that they don’t play too often – “She’s American,” “Paris.” I think this is the best setlist they could’ve curated for a festival, as fans could sing along to every song. If someone went out of curiosity, they might recognize a few of the songs and be able to sing along. And if someone didn’t know anything about them, these songs are the most popular for a reason, and they can discover new music they like.

As for the stage setup, they also went for something new. It is said that “they spent a significant amount of the budget on production,” having multiple large screens, catwalks, and a long walking pad at the front of the stage for Matty Healy to dance up and down on. The screens would occasionally display lyrics to their songs, mocking their own lyrics during their song “Chocolate” after Matty called himself a “poet.” They also had four large rectangle-shaped screens, one behind each band member, with their names above them. This was in reference to “the box,” which is seen as The 1975’s logo. Many fans have this logo tattooed on themselves to show their support of the band.

During the set, Matty mentioned being back soon. Whether this means a new album or a tour being announced for next year, no one is sure, but we are all eager to find out. “DOGS” was written on George Daniel’s drum kit; some believe this will be the name of their upcoming album, but we will have to wait to find out. The performance ended with a very wholesome moment, as Matty Healy broke into tears as the band members all came to the front to say their goodbyes to the crowd – many fans expressing their love for such an emotional moment of pride that their favourite band has finally headlined Glastonbury.

In my opinion, I think it was a spectacular show. I am very biased, as I am quite a big fan of this band. However, to see them headline Glastonbury was a very special moment for us all, and all I can say now is that I can’t wait to see what they have in store for us in the future.
