Wolf Alice releases brand new single & official music video, ‘The Sofa’ – out now

On July 11, British band Wolf Alice released their new single, The Sofa,” along with its music video, which serves as a taste of their highly anticipated fourth studio album, The Clearing, due for release on August 22. In homage to the song’s lyrics, the music video was shot in North London and depicts singer Ellie Roswell lying on a sofa that is moving throughout the streets. As she moves throughout the music video, you see scenes of people on the streets experiencing love and joy while they dance together. The saturation and slow motion in the video perfectly capture the dreamy vibes of the song. Directed by Fiona Jane Burgess, this street photography-inspired video captures vignettes of people from all walks of life, and features numerous easter eggs for the band’s upcoming album.

The piano ballad unfolds like a daydream on a lazy afternoon and showcases Ellie Roswell’s best writing yet. “Didn’t make it out to California / Where I thought I might clean the slate / Feels a little like I’m stuck in Seven Sisters / North London, oh England / And maybe that’s ok,” sings Roswell. The lyrics radiate unflinching honesty and speak about letting go of the self-consciousness that holds you back in your twenties and practicing self-acceptance.

“The Sofa” resonated with me as a mid-twenties person who has often questioned my path. Looking at where you are and accepting the beauty in that is a wonderful and freeing thing. Rowsell shares, “It’s about not trying so hard to figure everything out, reflecting on getting older and trying not to agonize over things that have or haven’t happened in your life. It’s also about trying to get to grips with the polarising aspects of one’s life when you’re in a band. You’ve just played a huge tour – and you come home, and you have your dinner on the sofa. For me, it’s summed up in how I treat TV. I used to never watch the same thing twice because I thought I’ve got so much to discover! And now I’m like, It’s okay if I just want to rewatch Peep Show for the thirteenth time.”

This new era of Wolf Alice puts them in their own league following their epic return to the stage, including performances at Glastonbury and a headlining set at Primavera Sound. Wolf Alice will be embarking on a North American headline tour this fall that will kick off in Atlanta, GA, on September 10.

The Clearing is a timeless record that explores love, loss, and human connection. It was written in Seven Sisters and recorded in Los Angeles with Grammy-winning producer Greg Kurstin. It takes on both playful and serious tones that articulate the coming-of-age experience for an entire generation. The ever-poetic storytelling shows the desire for the members of Wolf Alice, Ellie Roswell, Joff Oddie, Theo Ellis, and Joel Amey to have fun, secure in their ambition and ability at this unique moment in time. “The Sofa” was released following “Bloom Baby Bloom,” a fierce and impassioned introduction to the new album. As their first single in three years, the song will catch your attention with rolling bass riffs, toe-tapping piano melodies, and seductive vocals. It’s a uniquely feminine take on the hard rock genre. Director Colin Solal Cardo, famous for collaborations with artists such as Charli XCX and Robyn, deconstructs classic rock performances by drawing on Bob Fosse and All That Jazz. Ellie Roswell puts on a captivating performance in the middle of a group of dancers choreographed by Emmy-award-winning choreographer Ryan Heffington.

Wolf Alice has made great progress as a band since they emerged in North London in 2013. Their debut album, My Love is Cool, featured the Grammy-nominated “Moaning Lisa Smile,” and perfectly soundtracked the experience of youth first cutting their musical teeth. Visions Of A Life cemented their rise before the release of their 2021 album Blue Weekend. Through their discography, Ellie Roswell has solidified herself as a storytelling icon, sharing cautionary tales of the hurt experienced in your twenties and the valuable lessons to be learned. Wolf Alice has toured the world multiple times, and will continue to do so this summer, fall, and winter. Now, The Clearing reveals where Wolf Alice stands sonically in 2025, delivering a supremely confident collection of songs bursting with ambition, ideas, and emotion.
