Wicca Phase Springs Eternal, the boundary-pushing moniker of Pennsylvania-based musician Adam Andrzejewski, is once again reshaping expectations. His upcoming album, Mossy Oak Shadow, out September 19 via Run For Cover Records, marks a striking stylistic shift for the artist, stepping away from the trap-infused beats of his past and into a raw, brooding world of folk leaning minimalism.
Anchored by Andrzejewski’s signature sense of mysticism and emotional weight, Mossy Oak Shadow introduces a new chapter in the WPSE story, one that finds him trading 808s and digital distortion for aching acoustic guitars, spectral synths, and the ambient air of live studio takes. The result is a record that feels both haunted and grounded, familiar and completely out of left field.
To usher in this new era, WPSE has shared two new tracks—“Horseback” and “Enchantment”—that serve as gateways into the record’s brooding atmosphere. Recorded live with producer Ben Greenberg (Depeche Mode, Drab Majesty, Show Me The Body), the songs strip back Andrzejewski’s arrangements to their emotional core, with just drums, keys, and space to let every word settle.
“I always kind of thought that as long as I have the Wicca Phase Springs Eternal name, I can do whatever I want,” Andrzejewski reflects. “The name provides a framework for the lyrics and aesthetics. As long as I can make something work within that, the genre doesn’t totally matter.”
It’s a sentiment that echoes throughout Mossy Oak Shadow, an album that leans into the gothic Americana undercurrent that’s long flowed just beneath the surface of WPSE’s music. There’s no irony or detachment here, as is common for his previous work, this is a fully-formed vision, executed with complete sincerity. Even if Andrzejewski stops short of calling it a country record, the hallmarks are there: slide guitars, lonesome melodies, and a lyrical voice that feels steeped in campfire myth and roadside poetry.
From his work as a co-founder of GothBoiClique to his projects with Thraxxhouse, Misery Club, and Pay For Pain, Andrzejewski has always treated genre more like a suggestion than a rule. With Mossy Oak Shadow, he leans further into that vein than ever before and in doing so embraces risk, atmosphere, and above all, authenticity. While WPSE has been on my rotation for years I’m excited to explore a new side to his work and see what he comes up with next!
