Austin’s natives, Nuclear Daisies, bring their track “Toad,” a distinctive and surreal listening experience, combining the mind-tripping elements of the Cocteau Twins and the dance-evoking feel of The Chemical Brothers. Alex Gehring leads with raw and personal lyrics, reflecting on a tough time in her life when she felt powerless, watching one of her loved ones suffer. Both the music video and single debuted with FLOOD and would serve as the last look into their new album, First Taste of Heaven, released on August 1 via Portrayal of Guilt Records.
First Taste of Heaven has a compelling beauty and a natural cool that glides through every track— raw and impactful, powerful yet playful, brought together by songwriting that is candid as it is mysterious and hooking. First Taste of Heaven smoothly combines chaotic and intense sounds with moments of tranquillity and catchy melodies. Following up from their 2022 debut, which featured the hit single “Heaven in Your Head.”
The powerhouse of a band Nuclear Daisies is made up of members Rob Glynn (ex Temple of Angels), Alex Gehring (Ringo Deathstarr) and Robby Williams. The unstoppable trio were the creators of the record that offered an eye-opening and psychedelic trip into a world full of chaos, while creating their twist on ’90s alternative and setting the path for the next generation.
First Taste of Heaven is about life with its ups and downs – a passage through a dystopian world, showcasing celebration, love, heartache, pain, acceptance and finally elevation physically, spiritually and even supernaturally. Though the creation of the record was based on personal hardships, it acts as an escape from the same jarring reality in the form of letting go and healing.
Nuclear Daisies recorded First Taste of Heaven at Hungry Dog Sound & Studio in Austin, with Williams being in the driver’s seat. They had a more hidden approach with their inspiration – “I’d say it wasn’t specific productions but more specific vibes that we wanted to emulate,” specifies Williams. “We had clear visions of how we wanted certain songs to not only sound, but feel, too, very sci-fi and dystopian. One song we wanted to feel like attending the vampire rave from ‘Blade’– tense, pulsing, but also a little bit dangerous. We wanted a different track to feel like the underground rave at the end of the world from ‘The Matrix’ – just sort of this lawless party of no rules at the end of days. There were also times when Alex would be in the booth and we’d say ‘sing it like you’re crying’ or ‘try it like a dead choir member.’ There are a lot of wild influences in there that come from disparate places and not just conventional ideas.”
