Minneapolis-based singer and songwriter Samia recently celebrated the release of her third LP, Bloodless, an album that Pitchfork described as being “held taut between the introspective and the spectacular, a record of self-discovery that takes audible pleasure in discovering new frontiers for her sound.”
Bloodless is the product of Samia’s longtime collaboration with co-producers Caleb Wright and Jake Luppen, as well as songwriting partners Christian Lee Hutson and Raffaella. Dealing with themes such as “unsolved mysteries — inexplicable cattle mutilations, the presence of God, the impossibility of femininity,” the album has an ethereal feeling that leaves the listener mystified. As she describes it, “(Samia) seeks comfort in absence and explores the allure of existing as fantasy.”
On top of the recent release of Bloodless, an old clip from Samia’s appearance on NPR’s 2023 Tiny Desk has reached viral status. The stripped version of “Pool,” off Samia’s 2020 debut album The Baby, has been trending across social media platforms, with the song being used close to 25,000 times on TikTok and Instagram Reels in the past week. Given the reaction across social media to this gut-wrenching melody, which deals heavily with the themes of grief, loss, and the fleeting nature of time, Samia has returned to the studio to provide fans with a stripped recording of “Pool,” which is out now.
