On August 25, 2025, rock band Thrice released their second single off their highly anticipated album, Horizons/West. The single, “Albatross,” is a heavy anthem accompanied by poetic lyrics of holding onto hope and loved ones around you. With the albatross being a symbol of good fortune in dire times, it’s a strong parallel to how the subject of the song is conveyed. Frontman Dustin Kensrue shares, “We can take the very thing the world has offered us as a token of hope and good luck and destroy it, and in that way, I’ve found that we often create our own ill omens. Thankfully, I’ve found it’s not always too late to reverse those same curses.”
It sheds light onto the variety of the album, with their first single, “Gnash,” leaning into a gritty and muddled sound that is much more aggressive. On these two singles, Thrice is showing the world what they are capable of within the rock world.
Starting in 2002 with The Illusion of Safety and following up in 2003 with The Artist In The Ambulance, Thrice has been embracing their ’90s rock roots and staying true to their love of gritty, hardcore instrumentals. They’ve been evolving their sound for over 20 years, and were inspired by how far they’ve come since the early days of their music careers. Each album they’ve created is full of complex emotions, giving monumental significance to every song released. With years of passion behind them, the group created Horizons/West as a continuation of their ambitions and a compliment to their previous album, Horizons/East (2021). Through all of life’s trials, Thrice has always come out on top, transforming their experiences into masterpieces for their listeners to enjoy.
