When Rainbow Kitten Surprise takes the stage, it’s never just a performance, it’s an experience that sweeps over the venue and stills all of the extra air, even when the venue is open air. Monday night at Red Rocks was no exception. From the first notes, Ela Melo and the band built their set with precision and abandon, layering raw, confessional lyrics over driving rhythms and bursts of rainbow light that transformed the amphitheater into something otherworldly. The crowd responded in kind, singing every word like a chorus of thousands, making the night feel as much like a communal gathering as it did a concert.
Still, RKS is never content to simply deliver the expected. In classic fashion, they dropped a surprise into the setlist: a cover of Fall Out Boy’s “Sugar, We’re Goin Down.” It was a nostalgic gut punch for anyone who came of age in the 2000s, but the band made it entirely their own. To raise the stakes even higher, Nick Carpenter of Medium Build, who had opened the show earlier in the evening, returned to the stage. What followed was a duet that felt both playful and commanding, with Ela and Nick trading lines and locking into each other’s energy like they’d been singing together for years. The crowd roared, not just because of the song itself, but because it was clear we were witnessing something that couldn’t be rehearsed or repeated.
That balance, of vulnerability and boldness, of raw emotion and celebratory chaos, is exactly what makes Rainbow Kitten Surprise so magnetic. They can turn, break your heart and then, minutes later, have the entire crowd screaming along to a pop-punk anthem. Monday night at Red Rocks proved once again that RKS create nights that stay with you, unpredictable and unforgettable.
