There’s a special kind of energy when They Might Be Giants hits the stage, and on Saturday night at Ogden Theatre, the anticipation was palpable. The room was sold out, shoulder to shoulder, and the Brooklyn odd pop heroes rewarded everyone with not one, but two full sets— or, as John Flansburgh joked, “We are opening for ourselves tonight.”
The vibe was loose and joyful— at times it felt like we’d stumbled into a secret rehearsal with a couple thousand friends invited. The Johns – Flansburgh and Linnell – traded deadpan banter and one liners, keeping the crowd laughing between songs. Longtime fans got a real treat with the first set built around 1994’s John Henry, a deep cut era the band hasn’t leaned into heavily on past tours. After a short intermission they returned swinging, tearing through a second set of classics, hits, and left field surprises.
It was a sharp contrast to their last Denver stop, when they played 1990’s Flood front to back. This night felt looser, more playful, and more personal. The band was tight, every harmony and horn line locked in, but never stiff. Watching them, it’s easy to understand why TMBG has built one of indie rock’s most beloved and enduring reputations: wildly inventive, genuinely funny, and musically fearless even after decades on the road.
