AFI releases their new album Silver Bleeds the Black Sun… via Run For Cover Records, today. The twelfth album from AFI includes the previously shared singles “Behind the Clock,” “Holy Visions,” and “Ash Speck in a Green Eye,” the last of which arrived earlier this week.
For more than three decades, AFI has been defying expectations and continually reinventing sonically. They have been challenging themselves and their loyal fanbase by dramatically evolving their sound with every album, refusing to be confined by the genre or by their considerable past achievements. Now, with Silver Bleeds the Black Sun…, this dedication has simultaneously expanded their audience and kept them and their fans eager to anticipate the band’s next move, ready to start a new chapter.
The goal of Silver Bleeds the Black Sun… was a journey to make an album with a singularly ethereal mood. To achieve this, the band was influenced by those who have always been at the heart of their sound, and now we’re being brought to the forefront. The result is a work that feels out of time, simultaneously a familiar echo of AFI’s core and a bold, fresh drawing on classic sounds and reinterpreting them through a modern lens to create something entirely new.
The album is dark and otherworldly, but also grandiose and stately, biting and beautiful in equal measure—in other words, it’s very AFI, yet not quite like any version of the band you’ve ever heard before. Speaking on its significance, Davey shares, “Silver Bleeds the Black Sun… is a sonic manifestation of the struggle to reconcile existence in the godless, uncanny dystopia that is modern life.”
The key to AFI’s more than 30-year relevance is its mix of fearless creativity and an undeniable sense of self. They are leading the way through emerging musical moments. From their scrappy roots as a high school hardcore band in the early ‘90s (Answer That and Stay Fashionable, Very Proud of Ya, and Shut Your Mouth and Open Your Eyes), to their dark melodic punk reinvention at the turn of the century (Black Sails in the Sunset, and The Art of Drowning), to their crossover into mainstream stardom in the early 2000s (Sing the Sorrow, and Decemberunderground) and their years as shapeshifting alternative rock journeymen (Crash Love, Burials, The Blood Album, and Bodies), AFI has survived and thrived by remaining true to themselves.
AFI is currently on their headline North American tour with special guests TR/ST to celebrate the release of Silver Bleeds The Black Sun… The 24-date run kicked off on September 30th in Madison, WI, and will stop in Chicago, Brooklyn, Boston, Atlanta, Dallas, and Denver before wrapping on November 5 in San Diego, California. The tour will mark AFI’s first full-scale outing since their celebrated 2021 release Bodies, and fans will get to experience the band’s signature songs from across their extensive catalog. Tickets are available HERE.
