On October 21, 2025, firebrand from Ohio released their newest single, “Backburner,” along with an official music video that is horror-themed, which is a perfect representation of the meaning behind the single. “Backburner” has versatile dynamics that create a chaotic atmosphere between the instrumentation and vocals. The title of the song is a metaphor, in my opinion, because it means that a person knows how to manipulate you mentally to stay around but not give you the emotional support that you need. It’s like the person wants to keep you warm enough to stay but also wants to give you a colder side, making you become emotionally stuck on a fine line of completely breaking. As the video progresses, you notice the switch between seeing the whole band and the vocalist being tied up with chains and taunted by a devilish woman. The woman in the video shows her true colors on the outside by looking demented and terrifying, which creates that imagery of what someone may look like who only wants to hurt you but also wants to keep you around for their personal gain.
““Backburner” is a song about not allowing yourself to be someone’s backup plan or second choice. I wrote it during an emotional time a few months after my girlfriend of over four years had broken up with me. It was an “ending on good terms” type of breakup, and she had even gone out of her way to tell me that she would be willing to try it again sometime in the future. This initially gave me a sense of hope, but left me in a state of limbo as time passed and I found myself at the crossroads of wanting to move on but feeling like I couldn’t since part of me was still holding onto that hope and waiting for her to come back into my life. I ended up at the conclusion that I should value myself more than to waste my time waiting on someone else while they do as they please, and I even found myself getting mad at the idea that they had given me false hope just to keep me as an “option” (whether this was actually their intention or not). This informed the heavy tone of the track, and helped me finally move on from the entire situation and get to a better place.” – firebrand
