The Frights take over Chicago: Billy Joel Jr, Remo Drive, and The Frights

Saturday night, I took to Bottom Lounge in Chicago, Illinois, to go witness The Frights in person for the very first time along with Remo Drive and Chicago natives Billy Joel Jr. This venue is tucked away in West Loop, and hosts some of the largest alternative shows in the scene. Part restaurant bar and part venue, I give my compliments to the stage lighting and tech crew at Bottom Lounge for not only making it sound incredible, but also for the great lighting, which I can always appreciate.

The entire night was short and sweet, packed with liveliness and outstanding performances. Billy Joel Jr. heated up the night opening for these touring artists. This emerging Chicago local band is super talented; I absolutely love some good ol’ indie rock, and these guys nailed the clean melodic vocals and riffs. I will definitely be returning for more coverage of their LP debut on December 18 at the Empty Bottle.

Remo Drive is a band I’ve been listening to for a few years now, and I love to watch artists that I admire and respect grow into their own sound. This band freakin’ laid it on us thick in the best way. I always love artists that move around a ton on stage and give it their absolute all for 45 minutes; they are so energetic and were probably one of my favorite performances of the entire month. Remo Drive played some crowd favorites and blessed us with some new sounds—a lovely mix. Mad love to this band; they sounded amazing.

Finally, the GOATS came out! The Frights celebrated their newest album, Ready When You Are, and it did not disappoint. This album encompasses everything we know and love about The Frights, down to their signature folk-punky thrash genre, and includes challenging themes that translate into rhythmic, meaningful lyrics. I absolutely love The Frights’ style of writing and consistency of reliable narration in difficult and relatable storytelling. 10/10 — this performance and entire show was so wonderful, and I wish this tour all the best as they continue to finish it out!
