Sabrina Carpenter goes behind the scenes of “Manchild” in Vevo Footnotes

On December 18, Sabrina Carpenter gave fans an early Christmas gift with the release of the latest episode of “Vevo Footnotes,” taking them behind the scenes of her music video for “Manchild,” released in June. Alongside co-directors Vania Heymann and Gal Muggia, Sabrina carefully explains the creative vision, ideas, favorite moments they shot, and even hidden Easter eggs viewers might have missed.

The entire shoot lasted three days instead of two because of the number of scenes filmed. Sabrina also said that the hardest part of the video was post-production, as it was difficult to choose which scenes to keep in the final edit.

Vania Heymann and Gal Muggia explained that, “Initially, the concept was to create a trailer for a nonsensical, forgotten film. We were inspired by self-revelation films, Americana, and a kind of disco-era sensuality with some strong post-’60s vibes.” The music video clearly reflects their creative vision, from the wardrobe and color grading to the scenery and props.

Sabrina revealed one of the hidden Easter eggs: the acronym for her new album, Man’s Best Friend, appears on the motorcycle license plate, something fans only noticed after she made the announcement later on. She added that she loves playing with details like that, not only for the fans but also for herself.

The directors also talked about their favorite moments in the video. “The roadside breakdown scene was somewhat a surprise, because the emotional intensity of Sabrina’s performance elevated the moment far beyond what we expected. And of course, filming the car driving off the cliff was pretty exhilarating for everyone.

The episode offers an insightful look into the visuals and collaboration behind the video, with Sabrina, Vania, and Gal sharing their thoughts. To hear more anecdotes, you can watch the “Vevo Footnotes” episode here.
