Marty Supreme: A cautionary tale

A week ago, I saw A24‘s newest film Marty Supreme. I’m not going to lie, the film didn’t hit for me as it did for others. Let me explain.

Before watching the film, I had only seen the trailer and had high hopes for it, expecting a story about an athlete’s big dreams coming true. However, the film turned out to be more focused on an arrogant male athlete who believes he is the best, and along his way to success, shows little regard for the destruction he causes.

While I do appreciate a good, messy film, this one was a bit too much for me. Marty Supreme’s excessive cockiness was off-putting, especially since I am a former athlete myself. Additionally, the film was rife with elements of white privilege that didn’t sit well with me. Between the white privilege and Marty Supreme’s arrogance, I found the character to be a significant turn-off.

I also felt that the pacing of the film was slower than I would have liked, though I understand it was intended to build up for the finale. There were certain parts that I believe could have been sped up to improve the overall flow.

One positive aspect of this film that I appreciate is the promotional campaign and the excitement it built. From a marketing standpoint, I would rate it a perfect 10 out of 10. My social media feeds were filled with images of orange ping-pong balls, popcorn buckets, and merchandise leading up to the film’s premiere. I must say, the merchandise is quite stylish. However, I wish the film itself had lived up to that standard. I’m very curious to see how it performs during award season, whether this year or next, and if it will receive any recognition. Clearly, the film has found its fans. I may not be one of them, but it was definitely an interesting film, to say the least.
