Billy Idol’s “Dying to Live” contender for Best Original Song at 98th Academy Awards

Infamous ’80s rockstar Billy Idol has been busy alongside longtime colleagues with the production of Billy Idol Should Be Dead, a film centered around his life and career so far. Inspired by the developmental process of the movie, Idol and J. Ralph teamed up to create Dying to Live.” According to Idol, the song is meant to be a poignant method of tying together and concluding the story.

Billy Idol emerged in the 1970s and quickly became a hot topic in the punk-rock and pop-punk community after hit releases like “White Wedding” and “Rebel Yell” in the early ’80s. Idol has performed with guitarist Steve Stevens for several decades, who also largely contributed to the making of Idol’s upcoming movie.

The track has already garnered much praise, with Billboard naming “Dying to Live” a top contender for Best Original Song and The Hollywood Reporter applauding Idol’s vocals.

Composer J. Ralph commented on the song-making process: “The vision was to create a cinematic finale for the film built around visuals and a thematic orchestral piece featuring Billy’s voice and a string quartet. Composing the song inside this sonic universe reveals every nuance and vulnerability of his vocals and lyrics in a way he had not yet expressed in his previous work. He was totally up for it and brought the same rebellious spirit and fearless energy that defines his life and the very essence of punk rock. We are extremely grateful that the Academy recognized the song with this honor.”

Billy Idol Should Be Dead recently premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival over the summer and is expected to be released to the public in the spring of this year. Idol has set the bar high with the release of “Dying to Live,” and subsequently, the film is already picking up speed among fans and media alike.
