Tunisian-French metal band Myrath released “The Funeral” in December, along with its music video. This is the second track that has been released and will be part of their new album, Wilderness of Mirrors. The drop date is March 27. Contrary to the title of this track, the song is meant to bring an emotional, bright, and uplifting experience to its listeners. Instead of darkness, the band is looking to be bold in its statements. They state it’s meant to be “a celebration in life, death, and boundless creativity.”
I’m always in awe of artists who want to produce music that might be perceived differently and in more uncommon ways. Society views death as the end of all things; it’s not celebrated. It’s supposed to be sad because it means we are losing someone. Yes, losing someone is hard on one’s life—I speak as someone who has lost several family members and friends to illnesses or simply because it was their time. But that shouldn’t be the only thing we focus on. Life is precious and meant to be celebrated, even after the end. The stories of those we’ve lost can serve as reminders of who they were and what they accomplished in their lifetime.
Myrath chooses to look at life through a different mirror, offering a unique perspective. Mirrors are not just reflections. If you watch several films, there’s often a mirror room sequence, where the reflections continue on into eternity as they bounce off each other. Myrath has expanded on their emotions through an evolution that blends oriental influences with their power metal sounds. Fans should be prepared to embark on a new journey through fantasy and reality, filled with haunting melodies, thunderous riffs, and cinematic arrangements.
I think this song and its music video do poetic justice to all of the band’s choices. The video really showcases the beauty and celebration in death. The contrast is striking in the way it flips between the band performing and Tunisian dancers. The vocals and backing chants are paired with long-lasting melodic sounds. It’s such a well-put-together song, and I’m intrigued to see what else this band releases later this year.
