ALBUM REVIEW: MIKA Hyperlove

MIKA is back with a new album, and the first thing that struck me is how different it is from the rest of his discography: innovative, modern, and joyful.

MIKA is an incredible singer, extremely creative, and full of inspiration. This album, Hyperlove, is entirely written and sung in English, driven by piano melodies and analog synthesizers. There is a strong sense of urgency throughout the record — an urge to have fun, to innovate, and to highlight the real world and its strengths, especially technology.

The album opens with its title track, “Hyperlove,” which explores a theme very dear to Mika: love. But what is even more surprising is the appearance of a robotic voice from the second verse onward. This voice asks a fundamental question — “What is love?” — setting the guiding thread of the album. We are clearly witnessing a brand-new direction for Mika.

The next track is “Modern Times,” the single that introduced the album. It is a danceable, almost electro song, firmly rooted in electropop, with sonic elements reminiscent of “Grace Kelly.” It immediately makes you want to dance and sing along live with him. Spinning Out” follows in the same vein, extending this festive and modern energy.

With “Science Fiction Lover,” Mika brings to mind “Underwater,” but in a more mature form. Once again, machines add energy and an irresistible urge to dance. The lyrics are catchy and highly effective. Mika addresses life’s questions and everyday problems with lightness, encouraging listeners to step back from their worries. The message is clear, as suggested by the title itself: “Take Your Problems With You.”

The album then takes a softer turn with “Excuses for Love.” This track once again proves how comfortable Mika is across genres. You can hear echoes of Elton John, almost operatic touches, all wrapped in a rhythmic production that makes you want to experience the song live.

Hyperlove is a varied album that never slows down. It features several interludes that serve as transitions and almost feel like clues to how these songs might be connected during a live show. This constant movement reinforces the feeling of a continuous musical journey.

With “Immortal Dreams,” Mika embraces classic radio-friendly codes, built around airy sounds and soaring melodies. The album finally closes with “Immortal Love,” a track where his voice truly rises. This is pure Mika DNA: his very high, powerful voice, carried by a chorus that keeps climbing, higher and higher, leaving a lasting impression.

Throughout Hyperlove, we find the very essence of Mika — his unmistakable sonic identity — as well as a real sense of maturity and precision in the songwriting and composition. It is a cohesive, generous, and confident record.

With 15 tracks, the album never loses momentum. Everything flows seamlessly, like a long night where everyone is invited to dance.

A successful album: 8/10.

Redaction grade: a very successful album, smart, interesting, and joyful, full of colors: 8/10.
