Moby is an American musician and producer who has been widely recognized for his influence in music since the ’90s. On January 21, he shared a brand new live version of his well-loved track “When It’s Cold I’d Like To Die,” featuring vocalist Jacob Lusk. This release is the lead single and first track from the brand-new album Future Quiet, out on February 20. Future Quiet will be Moby’s 23rd studio album and his first-ever collaboration with this particular vocalist.

Jacob Lusk is a singer/songwriter from Compton, California. He was first discovered on American Idol back in 2011, placing fifth in the show’s tenth season. It was then that his incredible vocals gained nationwide attention. In 2016, Jacob founded Gabriels, a trio including himself, Ari Balouzian, and Ryan Hope. This group went on to release multiple beautiful projects and perform alongside wildly influential artists such as Elton John, Harry Styles, and Celeste.

“When It’s Cold I’d Like To Die” was originally released along with Moby’s 1995 album, Everything Is Wrong, and featured vocals by Mimi Goese. Despite the track’s audience now, its initial release lacked the same passionate response. Moby has even described the project as “an obscure song with no drums or bass and was never released as a single.”

However, over the last decade, the song has attained a wave of modern popularity, primarily driven by its usage in the Netflix phenomenon Stranger Things. “When It’s Cold I’d Like To Die” is written beautifully into multiple scenes throughout the show. As the noise surrounding its fifth and final season grows, so does another generation of individuals who call this song a fan favorite. The track was featured for a final time in the newest season of Stranger Things and remains just as compelling, thematically ending a theme of loss and grief across seasons.

Moby describes the vocals of Jacob Lusk as “transcendent,” and I couldn’t agree more. This live version of “When It’s Cold I’d Like To Die” is truly unforgettable and the perfect visual representation of such an emotive song. It features an orchestral take on the track, paired with a shiny grand piano played by Moby in the center of his own sunlit living room. Jacob Lusk stands amongst the instruments, allowing his emotion to radiate through his vocals, successfully delivering a breathtaking new version of “When It’s Cold I’d Like To Die.” The staging, along with an incredible performance, made for such a memorable watch. It’s very clear that every part of this project was done with strong intent and emotion.

Moby has proven himself as an iconic songwriter and musician time and time again. From his breakthrough hit “Go” in 1991 to the major success of “When It’s Cold I’d Like To Die,” he has continuously given his audience a catalog of incredible work.
