GWAR has spent decades building its reputation for its outlandish stage presence and being at the forefront of heavy metal. Recently, they announced their U.S. tour, “Gor-Gor Strikes Back, and returned to the A.V. Club Undercover for a record-breaking seventh time, surpassing their own record in the process. It was to their fans’ surprise that they chose to cover one of the most popular “girly pop anthems” of the 2020s, “Pink Pony Club” by Chappell Roan. Despite their aggressive, assaulting instrumentals, GWAR gravitated to the song simply because they related to its message.
The Berzerker Blöthar states, “‘Pink Pony Club’ is about embracing exile from a boring, shitty world and remaking yourself into whatever you want—be who you are, be who you aren’t, piss people off, we don’t care!”
GWAR transcended genre, taking a revolutionary song meant to help you discover your identity and how to express oneself, then turning it into an anthem even their most loyal listeners can enjoy. Although unorthodox, they did a fantastic job at staying true to both the original and not compromising their own sound, making an easy trade-off of glitter and heels for theatrical chaos and hooves.
