Grace VanderWaal returns with her new single “Prettier,” a quietly powerful song that explores longing, projection, and the emotional weight of being admired without truly being understood. Co-written with Julia Michaels, Grant Boutin, and Mark Schick, the song captures the notion that love without connection isn’t enough.

Set against vivid, blurred, contrasty, expressive imagery, “Prettier” illustrates walking through crowded rooms and receiving empty praises, delving into the loneliness that comes with being idealized rather than seen as a person. It explores the essence of feeling lonely despite being surrounded by people and praise. Grace delivers the song with an intense refrain that asks, “Do you feel prettier when you hold me?”

My new single Prettier is about being seen but not heard in a relationship, and wanting something more,” Grace shares.

The release follows her other single “High,” a reflective and nostalgic track that marked the beginning of a new creative chapter for VanderWaal. Together, “Prettier” and “High” reflect Grace VanderWaal’s continued evolution after her critically praised album CHILDSTAR. CHILDSTAR examined growing up in the public eye, reclaiming autonomy, and redefining herself as an artist. Tracks like “Proud” and “What’s Left of Me” explored the past, whereas “Prettier” explores the present. “Prettier” is available to stream everywhere now, alongside the official lyric video.
