Adam Paddock takes Columbus Against The World to a new level

I’ve lived in Columbus for a few years now. If there are two things I’ve learned in my time here, they are: never drive downtown during an OSU home game, and that we have a fantastic local music scene.

Last year, I got wind of a show being held at Newport Music Hall, hosted and headlined by Adam Paddock, who is a man of many talents and equally as many homes, but has a particular fondness for Ohio. It’s a three-artist event focusing on local talent and highlighting the importance of local music.

This year is the fourth year of the infamous Columbus Against The World, and I had the privilege of attending and photographing the show this year.

The lineup this time around held special meaning to me, as it featured a band I’ve been following since their debut in the Columbus scene.

But first, to open the night, we had Douglas Katula. The alternative indie rock vibes were a wonderful way to open the night. Many in the crowd recognized him for his vocals in Outsider Heart, as did I, but I found it refreshing and intriguing to hear his solo work live. Douglas also played a cover of “Daddy Issues” by The Neighborhood that had the whole crowd singing along.

I remember the first time I saw the next band play. It was a show over at Bristol Republic, and they played a short set that had an absolutely groovy vibe. They also just looked like they were having fun. Sunday Driver is a groovy indie rock band that has a blast being on stage performing music for the masses or for 20 people at a bar. I hope to see them make a return to the stage in the future.

To top off the perfect night, we had Adam Paddock, a man known and loved by many. He’s also an incredibly familiar face in the local scene. If you don’t know him, you probably know someone who knows him.

Adam is one of those artists who only gets better each time you see them. In between snapping pictures, I found myself swaying with the crowd to songs, and at one point, crying tears of joy and appreciation to my favorite song, “Tender,” which hit especially hard live. Adam has a wonderful stage presence and a smooth voice that makes the soul yearn for more.

The night was full of wonder, appreciation, and celebration as some bands made their debut on the Newport stage and others made an exciting return. Once again, Columbus Against The World met my expectations and more. I cannot wait to see who takes the stage for year five.
