With over 15 years of experience in the music industry, it is no surprise that Volumes can still make big waves in the metalcore scene. Mirror Touch is the band’s latest blast into the scene, and their promotional tour of the same name is their first in four years. Making 16 stops across North America, alongside Cats Claw and Notions, Volumes gave us all a wild ride from start to finish.
While the tour only included the three acts listed above, Las Vegas attendees were also treated to a local opener, Words from Aztecs. Blending hardcore with some deathcore sounds, it was a great way to start the night. They gave a solid taste to whet your appetite for things to come.

Cats Claw coming to the stage was a different take for me. With a sound that was much harder, full of heavy vocals and screams, I can’t say it was my cup of tea. I found it was more of a challenge to understand the lyrics being used. That being said, the emotion and feeling they are conveying are very easy to grasp. Presence and stage demeanor were great with them, though, so despite my lack of comprehension, I was still able to enjoy their set.

The surprise for the night was Notions, though. Frontman Kalan Beal spent just about as much time out on the floor – and in the pit – as he did on stage. It didn’t matter where he was standing, either; his energy and crowd work were upper echelon. Music-wise, I added them to the list of people to keep an eye on for sure. They have been around for a while, but this was my first time hearing of them, as well as seeing them. The nerd in me was laughing about how every song they have was written about one video game or another. With down-tuned guitars, scream-singing, and occasional rap verses, they have a great nu-metal sound that will stick with you.

How do I describe a Volumes show? Electric is probably the best way for me to convey the environment to you. When you have dual vocalists, crazy things are going to happen. Especially when one of them is Myke Terry and the other is Michael Barr, both of whom are legends of their own. This set gives us 12 wonderful songs from their entire lineage, with a heavy focus on newer tracks like “Dream,” “Adrenaline,” and “Bad Habit.” While I have been a fan for a number of years, this was my first time seeing them perform in person, and yet again, another one that I need to experience again. For this being the last night of the tour, you could see how they were pulling out all the stops. Terry’s crazy dance antics, which he is known for, were over the top and an absolute joy to watch. Barr’s emotion was felt deeply and will leave a lasting mark on each person in the crowd. The band as a whole played flawlessly and sounded like this was exactly what they were made to do.
All in all, the “Mirror Touch Tour” ended on a pristine note. All of us in Las Vegas were given a treat of a show that no one else will be able to replicate. I hope that we can get this type of experience again very soon!
