Death Cab for Cutie have announced their eleventh studio album, I Built You A Tower, arriving June 5 via ANTI- Records.
Alongside the announcement, the band has shared its first single, “Riptides,” a track that leans into the tension between personal struggle and the weight of everything happening beyond it.
The album marks a return to independent territory for the band after two decades within the major label system, and the shift feels reflected in how the record was made. Recorded across Los Angeles and the Pacific Northwest, I Built You A Tower came together quickly, built from a series of focused sessions that prioritized immediacy over polish.
There’s a sense of looking backward without getting stuck there. Following anniversary tours celebrating Transatlanticism and Plans, the band found themselves reconnecting with earlier instincts, writing songs that feel more direct, more human, and less concerned with scale.
The title itself points to something more internal. Rather than a monument to something lasting, the “tower” becomes a place to hold grief, something constructed to keep moving forward even when the past refuses to stay buried.
With I Built You A Tower, Death Cab for Cutie aren’t trying to recreate what they once were. They’re working through what’s left after it, and they decided to share the process with all of us.
