After teasing the record with standout singles “Die To Fall,” “Quiet Part Loud,” and “Palms,” The Maine has officially released their tenth studio album, Joy Next Door. The project marks another milestone for the band — John O’Callaghan, Kennedy Brock, Jared Monaco, Garrett Nickelsen, and Pat Kirch — as they continue to evolve their sound nearly two decades into their career.
Reflecting on the album, frontman John O’Callaghan shared, “I wanted to make an album that felt like the exact moments I had been wandering in for the better part of the last two years. And for the first time I wanted to speak as honestly as possible without being dramatic. ‘Joy Next Door’ isn’t about a crisis or a breakthrough, but more about a rather specific in-between; which is odd considering it’s our tenth studio album. And though it can’t guarantee happiness, I hope it’s a reminder that it’s more often than not closer than we think. Or at the very least, it gives you permission to sit in your own in-between without the worry of labeling it as good or bad.”
Along with the album’s release came two new singles, “Half A Spark” and “Green,” both of which are accompanied by music videos.
The Maine is currently on their first U.S. headlining tour in nearly two years, which also stands as the largest tour of their career so far. Later this year, they’ll take the “I Love You…But I Chose The Maine” Tour overseas for an eight-city European headlining run beginning in September, marking their most expansive tour across Europe to date.
In celebration of the album’s release, the band has been making high-profile appearances, including a performance of “Die To Fall” on “The Kelly Clarkson Show,” and taking over MTV’s Instagram story. As part of the album-release festivities, The Maine made an appearance at Skydeck Chicago in Chicago’s iconic Willis Tower, which lit its antennas green in honor of Joy Next Door and the band’s next era.
Released at a high point in the band’s career, Joy Next Door stands as one of their most cohesive efforts yet. Known for their attention to detail when it comes to full-length records, the band wrote and recorded the album in sequence, allowing the story to unfold naturally from start to finish. Continuing a long-running tradition, each album era is associated with a specific color — this time, green.
Drummer Pat Kirch explained, “Every album of ours has a color that represents it, and Joy Next Door is the green era. The green grass on the album art feels like it matches perfectly with the organic instrumentation and imperfections left intact on the album.“
Since their 2008 debut album, Can’t Stop Won’t Stop, The Maine has amassed more than a billion streams worldwide, has had several albums grace the Billboard 200, and has built a fiercely loyal fanbase. From major festival appearances at Bonnaroo and Lollapalooza to headlining their own sold-out 8123 Fest in their hometown of Tempe, Arizona, The Maine continues to prove themselves as a staple within the alternative scene as they enter this latest chapter with Joy Next Door.
