Live review: Fu Manchu & Tigers on Opium at Hawthorne Theatre, Portland

This past Friday night at Hawthorne Theatre in Portland, Oregon, the walls shook and the amps roared as Fu Manchu brought their fuzz-drenched, riff-heavy sound to Portland—and they did not come alone. Leading the charge was local heavy hitters Tigers on Opium, who kicked things off with a barrel of sound and unconfined live synergy. Their stage presence was massive, with crunchy guitar tones and pounding rhythms that got the crowd as soon as the first song landed.

By the time Fu Manchu hit the stage, the venue was bombinating with nostalgia. Celebrating decades of desert rock domination, they solidified their potency and influence with a performance that made the room rattle. From the moment the first riff hit, the heat and heart was unavoidable. Their sound filled the room like smoke—thick, warm, and impossible to ignore. Each song flowed into the next like a well-oiled muscle car cruising a desert highway, and the crowd was locked in for every minute of it.

Both bands put everything into their sets, and the passion never dipped. It was a night of head-banging, heavy grooves, and a reminder that rock ‘n’ roll is very much alive and burning up in Portland.
