Whitney tease new era with bittersweet single “Darling”

Chicago indie duo Whitney are back in their feelings in the best way possible. Today, they return with “Darling,” a short-but-soulful new single that clocks in under two minutes and still manages to hit like a slow-motion goodbye. It’s the band’s first new music since 2022’s SPARK and a taste of what’s to come from a group known for their sun-drenched sound and quiet emotional wreckage.

There’s something to be said for a 2-minute-or-less gem that aims for the heart,” the band shared. “Songs like ‘Gonna Hurry’ by Dolly Parton and ‘Take Care’ by Big Star come to mind.” That spirit flows through “Darling,” which opens with a wistful ache and unfolds into a second act of acceptance. Blink and it’s over—but you might just hit replay before you breathe.

The single arrives as Whitney gear up for a stacked summer. Following a run of amphitheater dates opening for Caamp and Shakey Graves, the band will embark on a full North American headlining tour starting July 20 in South Lake Tahoe, CA. The trek includes stops in Bozeman, Montreal (for Osheaga), a pair of intimate shows at the Levitate Backyard series in Massachusetts, and a return to fan-favorite rooms like Higher Ground in Burlington and Bell’s Eccentric Café in Kalamazoo. Support comes from the rising Folk Bitch Trio.

Formed in 2015 by Max Kakacek and Julien Ehrlich, Whitney carved out a lane of warm, honey-soaked indie folk with their debut Light Upon the Lake, and they’ve spent the last decade perfecting it. Whether delivering hazy heartbreak or subtle sonic pivots (Forever Turned AroundSPARK), the band’s perfectionist streak shines through in every soft-edged hook.

With sold-out tours, major festival sets (Coachella, Pitchfork), and a growing fanbase that knows every lyric by heart, Whitney is evolving in real time.
