On August 17, I met the boys from Dead Within Days. They returned to Lowell’s Koto Asian Fusion to open for Major Moment. This show was Major Moment’s last before they left to tour with Silent Theory.
Dead Within Days (DWD) is a New York quintet called the “world’s first blind lead metalcore band.” DWD features Robert Pepe (Guitar), Matt Chinkel (Guitar), Tom Bove (Bass, Backing Vocals), Anthony Latorre (Drums), and Joel Sofia (Vocals). The band blends classic metal, hardcore punk, and nostalgic 2000s metalcore with melodic riffs and blistering vocals.
“Music, making music, has always been one of those special places where nothing seems to fade. Writing songs and performing them was always a home for my spirit. At 27, my entire story changed, and there was nothing I could do to hold onto the life I had come to know.” -Joel Sofia
Joel’s life shifted at age 27, when he was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. He became legally blind from this new diagnosis. Even through this darkness, he found that he could still hear and feel.
DWD stands as a beacon of resilience and accessibility. Joel stands as a symbol of perseverance, even in the face of a disability.
“Music was one of the few remaining bastions of salvation for me. When everything changed, the opportunity to express myself in a way I had always saved my life. Leading down a path like a diver follows their lifeline. Allowing me to feel that I had not lost purpose or direction. DeadWithinDays, the music we create, and the message we believe in lie in that expression.” -Joel
Joel and Dead Within Days are amazing performers, and when they entered the stage, Koto was buzzing with excitement. They embraced the crowd, and the crowd reciprocated with equal enthusiasm.
I highly encourage you to experience their live performances by going to a show near you.
