Boston’s Roadrunner may be one of the city’s biggest venues, but on Wednesday night, mxmtoon made it feel like something much smaller. And much more personal. Despite the spacious hall and a modestly sized crowd, the singer-songwriter’s “liminal space tour” brought warmth, vulnerability, and a sense of closeness that filled the room in a way sheer numbers couldn’t.
Touring in support of her 2024 album liminal space, mxmtoon made it clear from the start that this wasn’t just a tour. It was a carefully curated extension of her artistic vision. The album, as she shared on stage, was made entirely by women. That spirit of collaboration carried over to the tour’s structure too, with mxmtoon intentionally spotlighting female openers across the dates. For the Boston stop, that spotlight belonged to Katherine Li.
Hailing from Toronto, Li opened the night with a set full of sincerity and charm. She breezed through her fan favorites, offered up an earnest cover of Katy Perry’s “The One That Got Away,” and gave a preview of what’s to come with an unreleased track. Her presence was humble, joyful, and full of the kind of on-stage energy that makes an opener easy to root for.
When mxmtoon took the stage, the crowd settled in for a set that balanced nostalgia with new chapters. Longtime fans were rewarded with staples like “feelings are fatal” and “prom dress,” songs that helped define her early bedroom-pop era. But there was also a sense of evolution woven throughout the night, perhaps best encapsulated by “i hate texas,” a cheeky, twangy dive into country-leaning territory that somehow still felt right at home in her catalog.
The show closed on a high with “dance (end of the world),” a track that, true to its title, had the crowd moving like it really was their last night on Earth. It was an upbeat, communal sendoff that matched the tone of the night: thoughtful but unpretentious, intimate but full of reach.
In a time where spectacle often overshadows substance, mxmtoon’s Boston stop was a reminder that deliberate choices, about who you collaborate with, how you share your story, and the energy you bring to a room, can leave the most lasting impression.
