After releasing their fourth studio album, The Sound A Body Makes When It’s Still, Hot Mulligan went on tour across the United States. Hailing from Lansing, Michigan, it was only fitting for them to round off their tour with their annual Christmas-time festival, “Ho Ho Hot Mulligan,” in Detroit. With five different bands opening for them each night, Ho Ho Hot Mulligan is a truly unique experience to share music with their fanbase.
The venue was buzzing with energy during each set—crowd surfers landing in front of the barrier, people opening the mosh pit in the opening sets, and groups of friends dancing in the balcony seats. Everywhere was full of excitement for the night to come. To get more pictures, I almost sacrificed my camera to the chaos of the pit, watching people of all walks of life share a moment when their favorite bands took the stage.
On Sunday night, they had a variety of bands within the emo genre to create a well-rounded set for everyone to enjoy. Ranging from punk to alternative rock, each set was unique to the current band.
Hot Mulligan frontman Tades Sanville told the audience that “this is an opportunity to perform with our favorite bands.” The melting pot of openers was encapsulated in Hot Mulligan’s own set. Opening with hits from their newest album, they showed how much time they put into evolving their sound while staying true to their Midwest emo roots. Their setlist had a little bit for everyone, including all their fans, and brought them together in one mosh pit. Their performance felt raw and unfiltered, with Tades taking center stage while the rest of the band held down the sidelines.

“Ho Ho Hot Mulligan” is a night that will never be forgotten—new musicians taking the stage with iconic members of the emo scene, the sense of community found in each section of the crowd, and the authentic sound of Hot Mulligan encapsulating their old and new sonic identity in one dynamic setlist. It was the perfect way to round off an exciting tour and shows the deep impact Hot Mulligan’s music and fanbase have on Michigan’s local scene.
